Fort Myers is no stranger to tornadoes. On February 22, 1998, an EF2 tornado ripped through the city, causing $52 million in damage and injuring 60 people. Sixteen years later, on January 20, 2014, another EF2 tornado hit the city, injuring four people and causing $21.5 million in damage.
More recently, on May 9, 2018, an EF3 tornado tore through the city of Fort Myers Shores, causing $364 million in damage and injuring four people. This was the most destructive tornado to hit southwest Florida since records began.
All told, there have been 22 tornadoes recorded in Lee County since 1950.
